Want to be a Web Designer? Learn CSS.

I run into quite a few people who tell me they would like to be a web designer and ask what they should learn first beyond a basic understanding of html. I used to struggle between telling them javascript or CSS during a time when CSS was not as much of a standard. My answer to them now is to first learn Cascading Style Sheets because it is a very standard and widely used technology that continues to evolve and be used for more and more of the interactive elements of a web site. The following link is a bit dated but a replacement of table based layout techniques is a good place to start with CSS.
